Stuck in boot loop

Asked by Stef

I have ubuntu dual-boot installed on my laptop and it has worked fine for almost a year, but a few days ago I couldn't login to ubuntu anymore. When I start my laptop and choose ubuntu in GRUB, my screen turns black, then I get the Ubuntu splash screen, then black again, splash screen again and so on... I am able to login with ctrl+alt+f1 and recovery mode also works fine. I can't think of any reason that could've caused this, since I didn't install new drivers or something like that.
Could anyone help me please?

Who owns the desktop ?
ls -al .ICEauthority .Xauthority

What is the state of graphics ?

Stef ; Well - not .

displays are unclaimed .. no drivers for the desktop are loaded.

Now the bad news from my perspective : I have no skills with the Intel graphic's set .

The 940m takes the latest driver for nvidia, as this is a hybrid system - I would go with the proprietary driver. However, installing the nvidia driver I do not know how or to what effect will be for the Intel side.

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/123918/en-us

" I am able to login with ctrl+alt+f1"

From this F1 terminal .
Will not hurt to try and see what does result:
Secure boot disabled - as we install 3rd party software
sudo apt purge nvidia*
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Maybe removing the xorg.conf and in the new nvidia install a new file will be built; then the Intel driver will load ??

Depending on your release is what driver for nvidia the system chooses for the autoinstall .
reboot to see the effect

-worth a shot-
