My windows 10 computer does not recognize my USB drive containing Ubuntu.

Asked by Edward

I downloaded the Ubuntu operating system onto a USB drive through using the "Something else" feature on the download and I partioned it with /dev/sdc (my USB) so that it would use up only 45gb and I setup another partition so that the disk swap is the same as my ram (16gb). After completing the install completely, I was unable to open the Linux on my computer.

I am using a Windows 10 Predator G6-710 Acer. During the boot setup, my USB does not show up no matter what I do (turning off secure boot, uefi, turning on CSM and legacy). I checked if the USB had the Boot for the Linux by going into the "Try Out Linux" feature in my download USB and it showed that it was a fully operational USB for Ubuntu.

I would like to learn how to make my USB recognizable by my computer.

I have not tried using it on another computer yet....

The Ubuntu OS uses Ext4 as it's file system. This is not natively readable by Windows (it can only read a small number of file systems).

You need a 3rd party tool to read the data. Alternatively (because Ubuntu can read and write NTFS despite it being proprietary) you can boot Ubuntu and copy the data to your NTFS partition and then Windows can access the file(s).

It's a shortcoming of Windows.

What third party took could I use?

How would I go about copying the data to my NTFS partition?

Nautilus can mount NTFS for you. It should be visible in the left hand panel in the file manager

Can you help with this problem?
