High Pitch Noise in Ubuntu

Asked by djleon83

I need some assistance with my Laptop.

I'm using a HP DV6000
GeForce GO7400
4 GB Ram
500GB Hardisk

I've done a dual boot and single boot in Ubuntu. I've tested 7.04 & 8.04 and what happen is that everytime ubuntu starts, i will get a high pitch noice (NOT FROM THE SPEAKER) and it will stops for a while only when it's loading something. At first i thought that it might be a hardware issue, but I've tried both XP & Vista, and i don't get such noise. What could it be? Any Ideas?

I think the noise come from hardisk while ubuntu process it ...

Sometimes when hardisk have a lot of something to process, it should make a noise because it's spinning more quickly ....

Hello, sorry if you already know this ...

You can see what ubuntu doing while booting (by default you just see a orange bar progress) ....

install startup manager, go to synaptic package manager, search word startup, and just install it ...

After installing startup manager, you can run it in system - administration - startupmanager ..

There will be a choice, to display text during boot, choose it, and reboot ..

Good luck

Can you try booting up from the Ubuntu Cd "Try Ubuntu wthout installing anything". This should help us learn whether there is a problem with the part of the drive where you have put Ubuntu. it might also helps us learn whether the noise is coming from your Cd-drive. It does sound like a hardware issue. However, does your laptop have separate speakers that are plugged in by some cable or does it only have in-built speakers?

Hopefully this should narrow down where the problem is
Good luck and happy hunting from

Hi Abi,

Thanks for the suggestion, the interesthing part is that that high pitch noice could not be identify by some off my friends, which means that i had 5 of my friends to listen to that noice only 2 heard it and the other 3 don't. It might be what you've mention that the hardisk is running at high speed, but again when it is loading a program it will stop the noise for a while.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for you assistance as well, unfortunately it's not the CD-ROM or the Speaker, the CD-Rom is locate on the right hand side of my laptop and the built speakers are on the top of the keyboard. It's like what Abi had mention it might be the hard disk (I've 2 hardisk, 120GB - Original together with the Laptop & 500GB) tried both and it was the same.

Sorry for not updating, i was out from the country for 3 weeks and internet there just xxxx btw, i've tried it but it was still the same.. I believe that nothing much could be done and we could close this for the moment and just be aware if some1 had the same issue as well, then we'll consider this as an issue.

Sorry for that rather harsh note from the Janitor-bot.

It's odd the noise happens whichever of the hard-drives is unplugged. Is it possible to put an old or cheap hard-drive in, install Ubuntu or anything and then send the machine for repair? I would definitely get an estimate before committing to spending cash on a repair though.

Alternative (or first, before that) is it possible to try both drives in another machine?

Good luck with this

PS hope the journey was good and that returning home is better :)

Did you manage to resolve this? It might be interesting to know what you did to finally solve the problem as it all seemed very unusual and quite odd.
I hope all is well now
Good luck and regards from

Hi TOM,

Yes it still seems very strange, and i've finally had a chance to try it on another DV6000, i've used the same hardrive in and it doesn't have any sound. So this pretty much proof that is not the hardware issue, and lastly i manage to trace step by step and believe that it's the Touchpad. I've tried disconnecting the touch pad cable after opening up the whole laptop and that sounds got away. So everytime when i touch the touch pad while it's connecting the sound goes away and everytime i let go the sounds get back.

So unless someone meet the same issue and it's not the touchpad or else this would become a mystery. Lolz

I've tested on Vista, XP, Win 7 Beta, Ubuntu 7.04 & 8.04. Win 7 seems to also have made some sound so it seems more like a hardware issue. And thanks for you kind help as well. Cheers
