list pts terminals? w and who not listing?

Asked by steve.rueg

w or who commands are not listing the PTS pseudo-terminals: pts/x . Shouldn't they. Didn't they?

I'm using a GUI, Xubuntu and also Unity. When I open several terminal windows, I can use $ tty to show that each window has a new pts: pts/5, pts/17, etc. I expected the w and who commands to list them all. However, w and who are only listing tty (tty7) which is running upstart. I understand why tty7 listed, but why aren't the pts terminals also listed?

Didn't w and who "use to" list pts? That's what I recall. But in my installations, the pts terminals are not listed. I don't understand it.
