wireless connection

My home router configured with WEP
After entering the code Ubuntu seemed to be stuck trying to connect
I'm using automatic IP setting
In some cases I can't even shutdown or restart and have to force a power down

I have the same problem, both on a Toshiba M5 Tecra (laptop, built in 802.11 device), and a HP Pavilion using a Netgear USB 802.11 device. Both of these work using windows .

I'm not sure what was it that solved the problem
The last thing I did which I think solved the problem was using root privilege account to set the network
I have a Toshiba Satellite with a Netgear PCMCIA wireless NIC
Works now
