If you need to recover your hard drive, but can't boot from it, you need to
run testdisk from a live cd.

Ubuntu-rescue-remix is a data recovery toolkit on a live cd.

http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/

You can download it here:
http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/Download

Testdisk can recover your partitions, but in case you run into trouble, you
can use parted to fine-tune your partitions. Parted also has a "rescue lost
partitions" function that is very useful.

For Testdisk you can do :

sudo apt-get install testdisk

To get the programs back you will have to reinstall them but the good news is that all the configurations might still be there.

If it's booting well and good , have a look at :

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
