When I restart the computer it goes straight to Windows. It never shows
anything from ubuntu. It's as if the disk isn't even in the drive.

You have re-set in the firmware (bios) for the medium the 1st boot priority ?

Bios looks for the boot code, where ever it find it fist, is what is booted.

Haskell Jones ;

How one access the firmware to reset the boot priority varies with each manufacturer.
What machine is this ? and what bios version ?
Do you have the user's manual for your machine to direct you how to reset the boot priority ?

reading is good

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
How did you put the data onto the CD? What steps did you take?

Thanks
