usb hard drive errors

Asked by jsgsix

I just installed Xubuntu 32 bit ver. 16.04 LTS using the mini.iso. I installed as a dual boot on a Dell laptop running an Intel Core 2 cpu, T7400 @ 2.16 GHz with 2 GB of RAM. The installation seemed to have been successful but there is one very pesky problem. I have a usb HD attached to my router and I can see it in File Manager but I cannot read or write to it from within Xubuntu. I can see all the files on the usb HD but cannot open them. However, I can copy a file from the usb HD to the Home/Documents folder and then read and write to them there. I have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed on another Dell computer that is connected to the same home network, and it can see and work with the usb HD just fine. Have I had a partial installation failure here with Xubuntu ? I am also experiencing some erratic behaviour when in a text writing mode as with this note. The cursor suddenly jumps back 2 or 3 words and starts writing over existing words. If I need to uninstall and reinstall where would I get help with that?

The browser works fine, Libre Writer works fine, I have even been able to tether my android phone sucessfully. Thanks in advance for your help. John Graves

What file system is the USB drive using? NTFS? FAT32? Ext3?

What technology is the router using to share the data? FTP? Samba? SFTP?

Thanks

The usb HD is a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, usb 2.0, NTFS, 320 GB. I am not sure about the technology the router is using but it is a fairly recent NetGear AC1200 Smart Router, Dual Band Gigabit, Model R6220. I still am having trouble understanding why Ubuntu handles this router installed usb HD and Xubuntu is having trouble with it. Don’t Ubuntu and Xubuntu have the same drivers for this sort of thing?

The result of your request was: command not found.
Some more interesting things about my problem with the usb hard drive attached to my router: I can copy files of various kinds to and from the drive without a problem. I can read those files if I copy them to I can create and save files from the MousePad to the Hd. I can open the following file types from the usb HD from within the File Manager: PDF, HTML, JPEG, TXT, mouse pad files. The problems that I am experiencing only occur when I try to open the following file types in Libre Writer: ODT, DOC, RTF. I even tried another word processor, Abi Word. It can open these files but it has a graphical error of a flashing screen after opening a file that won’t go away. I could try to uninstall and reinstall Libre Office, but Abi Word is also having some problems. Thanks for your help.

How does authentication to the hard disk on the router work?
Is there no security at all (everyone can access all files),
or do you have to use some kind of program as router admin where you can define who is allowed what, etc.?

No security authentication is required. My home network has 4 computers. One runs WIN XP and Ubuntu. Another one runs WIN XP and Zorin. Both of those computers and all those OS’s work just fine with my router connected USB HD. A 3rd computer runs just WIN 10. It connects just fine to the USB HD. The 4th computer is a Dell laptop running WIN XP and Xubuntu. The router’s USB HD works just fine with the WIN XP. Only Xubuntu is having the connection problems. I can’t help but think that there has been some kind of installation failure.
Perhaps the best solution is uninstall Xubuntu and reinstall? Can I purchase an installation disk for Xubuntu?

If you want to reinstall Xubuntu: You can download the installer from https://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/
Use https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto as guide for burning a disk.

I attempted a full reinstall of xubuntu 16.04 LTS using a new iso DVD that I downloaded from your repository today. I have a Dell Lapatop running an Intel Core 2 cpu T7400 2.16 GHz, 2 GB of ram. I have WIN XP Professional in one partition, and Xubuntu 16.04 LTS in another. I asked the installer to install over the old ver. 16.04 that had problems (review this question’s history). About 2/3 through the installation I started getting installation failure messages and the installation would progress no more. I ejected the DVD and rebooted. Now I can’t get into either WIN XP or Xubuntu. All I get is “error: unknown filesystem. Entering rescue mode…grub rescue>” I can no longer boot into anything. Very frustrating. It was not supposed to wipe my HD!

Aborting in the middle of the installation of an operating system probably was not the best reaction (even if there were error messages).

What happens if you re-try the installation of Xubuntu, using similar options for the disk layout as before?

Maybe it would be helpful to get some details about the error messages from the installer.

I did a totally new install from a DVD iso (the first install was from the
mini CD) and took the second option of writing over the already existing
version of xubuntu. I also skipped downloading updates during the install.
This was my 3rd attempt to install xubuntu. It was a successful install and
got me back into both xubuntu and WIN XP. However, I am still having the
same difficulty with my USB HD on my router. The *File Manager *sees the
drive and sees the files stored there but still will not open them with the
appropriate program. Libre Writer still stalls and ultimately fails to open
the .odt files. The odd thing is that I can copy to and copy from the
drive, just not open the files. Also, when I attempt to open the USB
storage drive a *"Password required for share usb_storage" *comes up. I am
presented with two options: "connect anonymously" or "connect as user"
which requires a password, presumably my admin log on password. Either way
I can get to the files but neither way allows me to open the files. I think
something strange is happening with the permissions on the drive. They are
all "greyed out" when I look at them in the properties.

Again, I am mystified as to why this USB network HD is easily accessed
by *ubuntu
*but not *xubuntu. *Also, WIN XP and WIN 10 have no trouble with this
drive. I have even downloaded and tried other file managers.* Dolphin *doesn't
even see the USB network HD. The *Files *program that is used in *ubuntu *does
a slightly better job but still has issues when used within *xubuntu*.

I was waiting for another reply to my unanswered question: Why can ubuntu
fully access my USB HD on my router and xubuntu cannot? No one has been
able to answer that.

IF you look at the mount properties for that disk on the Ubuntu and the Xunbuntu system and compare them - do you see any difference?
