ubuntu - can't use wpa

Asked by viliukas on 2007-05-14

hi,
i just installed my first ever linux (latest ubuntu release). i can't seem to get my wireless network working.
the network uses wpa protection, and i can only select wep.
now, after reading some answers and probably misunderstanding them, i have an almost blank /et/network/interfaces file...
my network card seems to be wokring, as i can see the wireless networks around.
as for my wireless settings, here are readings from my router:
 Configuration
Interface Enabled: Yes
Physical Address: 00:14:7F:25:B6:F3
Network Name (SSID): flat e
Interface Type: 802.11b/g
Actual Speed: 54 Mbps
Channel Selection: Auto
Region: Europe
Channel: 6
Allow multicast from Broadband Network: Yes
WMM: enabled
 Security
Broadcast Network Name: Yes
Allow New Devices: New stations are allowed (via registration)
Security Mode: WPA-PSK
WPA-PSK Preshared Key: 76C7C92F93
WPA-PSK Encryption: TKIP
WPA-PSK Version: WPA

and from my win xp:
Physical Address: 00-11-F5-03-68-B5
IP Address: 192.168.1.67
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.254
Lease Obtained: 14/05/2007 13:41:23
Lease Expires: 15/05/2007 13:41:23
DNS Server: 192.168.1.254
WINS Server:

i'm completely new to linus (that is why i'm using ubuntu after all), so please don't speak in zeros and ones.

oh, btw,
trying to install wpasupplicant i get a message that it is already in the newest version.
thank you for your help,
