Running newly installed programs

Asked by W. D> Allen

As an Ubuntu newbie I can now download and install programs, BUT...

Unless they automatically put a name on the drop down applications menu or an icon on the desktop I can not determine how to run them. Have gone through my 900 page "Unleashing Ubuntu" book and a couple dozen possibly related answers on this web site but have not found the guidance I need.

After a program is downloaded and installed how does one (1) put an icon for the program on the Gnome desktop and/or (2) list it on the application drop down menu?

Thanks,

W. D. Allen

Try to right click on the menu bar and open the "Edit menu" option. You'll be able to browse your current menu contents and add/remove/modify menu entries. When you add a new entry, you should know the program name that should be launched when that menu option is selected.

It's hard to say without knowing exactly what you intend, but you may get a list of installed files for any package in synaptics by right clicking on the desired package and selecting "Properties" --> "Installed files" tab. Executable programs are usually stored in the directory /usr/bin, so these files may probably be what you're looking for.

Good luck,

Hey Allen,

I am giving you an example.Say you have just downloaded VLC Media Player.Since it is a Video or Sound player it will be present in Applications -> Sound & Video. There you will find VLC Media Player. Another Example is say if you just downloaded Pidgin which is a messenger, you will find it in Applications->Internet.This is how you will find your installed programs.

If you want to add a shortcut for your downloaded program just find for it in the Applications and just click and drag it to your desktop.

Hope you found my solutions helpfull

Good Luck
