STAC92xx analog sound codec not working on Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by DB

HP DV 7 1275 audio problem on Ubuntu 8.10

Hello, just got a new laptop with all the details in the summary line (HP DV 7 1275) and I am having some odd audio problems. I get either persistent beeps or no audio at all. I originally installed 8.04 and upgraded but then on the recommendation of another forum I started over and installed 8.10 from scratch. I have also done everything any forum has said regarding pulseaudio (both correcting and removing it- neither worked, though with pulseaudio up and going the beep came back. That's kind of an improvement over nothing, I think). I have no idea what the hardware on this thing is and I am not a real techy sort of fellow. I just want this to work! Not giving up, if going slightly nuts... Oh, there is a link to another thread someone asked me to post and I will just as soon as I figure out how. Thanks in advance.

Ok, the linking is not so hard, I guess.

This fellow and I are having virtually the same problem.

Hi,

You might be experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/279187

Please try this workaround (removing splash from end of kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/279187/comments/25

=================================================================

Concerning the other audio issues:

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your sound card, please first follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

asoundconf list
sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --sound
aplay -l
cat /dev/sndstat
lspci -nn
lsmod | grep snd
cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec
grep audio /etc/group

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

=======================================================================================

Please also read the following pages

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/audio_intel_hda (check for correct /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base options at bottom of this page)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

for some initial suggestions.

You should add the following string to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file

options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL

Valid model names (that replace YOUR_MODEL) depending on the codec chip, can be found at

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-intrepid.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt

If you do not know your codec chip name, you can execute the following Terminal command to find out:

cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec

Make sure to set all channels to high volume levels in alsamixer EXCEPT for "external amplifier".

If the output of the command

grep audio /etc/group

looks like this:

audio:x:81

or like this:

audio:x:81:pulse

Then replace that audio line with something like this:

audio:x:81:<your login name>

where <your login name> is the username you use to log into Ubuntu

Kind regards,

Mark

Ok, thanks for the info. I tried the solution listed in the second linked threads you noted but there were some differences between that poster's readout compared to mine.

This is what mine looked like:
title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic

uuid 82e0789a-7c7f-48c4-a817-bafa08036c33

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-11-generic root=UUID=82e0789a-7c7f-48c4-a817-bafa08036c33 ro quiet

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-11-generic

quiet

The other guy's reads like this:
title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
uuid 350e9591-f15d-4764-a69c-272e95287576
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-11-generic root=UUID=350e9591-f15d-4764-a69c-272e95287576 ro quiet
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-11-generic
quiet

The difference is on the 82e... compared to the 350e... I wonder if this matters as I tried removing the splash line (as noted above) and then rebooted. But nothing changed. I'm going to try the list of recommendations you noted now.

Ok, I've read through all the links you mentioned (even the ones in French- lucky I parler well enough to comprehend what I was reading) but nowhere can I find my HP model so I do any changes. Also, as the last few lines above make clear, my 'grep audio etc/group' thing does not look like what you indicated. I have the audio:x:29:pulse but not an audio:x:81:pulse. Plus, I don't know how to change that even if it matched.

I appreciate all the time you've put into helping me out. Hopefully, this gets solved so i can watch some movies on this thing!

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

2. and add these lines to the end of the file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

3. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

4. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/group

5. replace the following line:

audio:x:29:pulse

with this line:

audio:x:29:derick,pulse

6. reboot and retest sound

7. In the Mixer control panel, make sure to unmute all channels and increase the volume on all channels

Regards,

Mark
