ubuntu 17.10 monitors not recognized after reinstalling nouveau drivers

Asked by Ed Redman on 2017-09-11

I installed ubuntu 17.10 then tried to install nvidia drivers (384).
When rebooting, the system would just loop and never come to logon prompt.
I purged nvidia drivers and re-installed nouveau. Now when I logon I get only one monitor, which the system says is unrecognised .

If I run xrandr this monitor is unrecognized as "default" monitor. And only only allows settings of 1024x768_60.0.

My second monitor is not recognized at all. I tried to unplug the second monitor then plug it in but still not detected.

If I go to displays all I see is the "default" monitor and only settings is the 1024x768.

I have tried to reinstall xorg and nouveau but nothing seems to help resetting the monitors.

If I run a live system from a usb boot both monitors are recognized and have a variety of settings.

Obviously something is missing or something is preventing the monitors to be set up properly.

My question is how to I get ubuntu to recognize both my monitors and allow various settings for them?

I suggest you report a bug. Artful is not ready and not stable

There was an update this morning. Afterwords both monitors recognised . I would say that the problem has been fixed.

If you want a system that works as you expect then I suggest you wipe the install off and do a clean install of Xenial. Xenial is LTS and supported until April 2021.

If you are happy to put up with bugs and issues but want to report them to get Artful ready for release then please use Artful but don't expect a smooth experience. It's not for normal users yet. Even a number of weeks after release it will still be a bit shake.

I am already running ubuntu 17.04 on the same system.

Everything there works fine.

I installed ubuntu 17.10 on a small drive to test, with a hopes of installing as only boot next month when it is released..

As of now I have only two problems remaining.

1. cannot install nvidia drivers
and
2. fans are always running. This may relate to video drivers, because when I had the problem with monitors not being detected never had a problem with fans .

Thank you for the suggestions.
