I updated from 16 to 17

Asked by Fred Phillips

I updated Ubuntu from version 16 to 17 and when I reset my computer it still shows version 16 on log in screen and after I enter password home page loads and about 15 sec or so it returns me to the log in screen and asks for password again over and over what do I do? I ran a test when I restarted computer and everything there is good. Please help.

Please note that there is no "Ubuntu version 16" and "Ubuntu version 17". Each year there are two different Ubuntu versions published in April and October and the version numbers are 16.04, 16.10, 17.04 and 17.10 (currently in development). All these versions are different.

Please tell which version you had previously and what kind of upgrade you tried to do.

For further diagnostics please try the following:

When you see the login screen, press the keys Alt-F1 and you should see a black-and-white screen asking for your username with a "login:" prompt. enter your username and the password (when asked for) to login in this mode.
What output do you get for the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid

?

You can end this session with the command "exit" and then pressing ctrl-alt-F7 and you should be back on the graphical login page.
