Can't update or upgrade Ubuntu

Asked by Mark W

When I run:

sudo do-release-upgrade

I get errors:

"Getting update prerequites failed"

If I try via Update Manager I see a dialog saying

"Your Ubuntu Release is not supported anymore" and Update Manager hangs so I cannot dismiss the dialog and continue

I have Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS

Ubuntu 10. 04 is no longer supported in any way. It's like trying to get updates for Windows 98. There aren't any.

I suggest you wipe the install off and do a clean install of Xenial. Xenial is LTS and supported til April 2021.

There's still instructions on the official web site on how to upgrade from 10.04.

I assume that it is no more possible to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04, because also the next release to upgrade to (12.04) is also already in end of support status.

Maybe switching to the old-releases server as described in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades works for you.

For Upgrades to 12.04 there also was the possibility with the alternate CD, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PreciseUpgrades#Upgrading_Using_the_Alternate_CD.2FDVD

You have to be aware that you have to do several release upgrades to end up on a current Ubuntu release, something like 10.04 -> 12.04 -> 14.04 -> 16.04

In my opinion creating backup copies of the private files and then doing a clean new installation could be the faster solution.
