ubi-partman failed with exit code 141 for Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS install with Windows 10

I tried to install Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS with Windows 10 x64 on my C drive, after following the tutorials for downloading Ubuntu to a USB and the installation guide. (I disconnected my external hard drive which I had previously accidentally installed Ubuntu on.) After selecting the partitions and confirming to write to the disk to replace two partitions, I got the error: "ubi-partman failed with exit code 141. Further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing?" This error has been reported previously but the one with the latest update was in 2012. I have an ethernet internet connection while doing the install. There is nothing that I can find in the UI that allows me to get /var/log/syslog.

I have an ASUS Motherboard where Windows 10 was originally installed as an OEM version, while I don't know if it still is as I have upgraded it to v. 1703. There is enough space on the disk: there was around 26 GB selected to partition for Ubuntu and the remaining ~67 GB for the other partition. There was also another hidden partition but I didn't check that.

I will try to do an OEM install next and see how that goes.
