It seems that you don't have enough space.
1: Maybe you can use System > Administration > Partition Editor. With this you could resize your partitions.
2: To remove temporary packages of former installations run: sudo apt-get clean
3: I don't know the Deleted Items folder.
Hope it helps.

Thank you Peter for your rapid response.
I do not seem to have a Partition Editor. Ubuntu is the only operating
system on the computer.
When I use sudo apt-get clean, I am asked for the password, which, when
entered, the cursor goes to the next line. I have no indication if
anything has happened.
The Deleted Items folder is empty.
I did try removing some items in synaptic but to no avail.

Which Ubuntu version do you have?

Ok, 8.10. And you don't have a Partition Manager? This is very strange. Have you checked
System > Administration > Partition Editor?
Hope you will get a wise answer.

Yes, I did as you instructed. There is nothing called Partition Manager
on System- Administration menu.
The laptop, purchased from Dell came with Ubuntu 8.04 installed. It is
the only operating system on the laptop. Some time after purchase, I
installed Ubuntu 8.10 downloaded from the website.
Since sending the previous email, I kept trying to install from the
icon, always getting the same result.
I went and started up the Update Manager from the menu, and the whole
procedure went through without a hitch. Why I do not know. It seems that
the icon start for the update was in some kind of loop.

This is strange. Ask a question regarding a Partition Manager in 8.10. It must exist.

john,
The disk space problem is only related to the /boot partition, and because the update tries to write to /boot, it must be an updated kernel package. It is possible that there a several kernel images, and you do no need them all.
Please post a list of what's in /boot with this command:
ls -l /boot

Well, you have 8 kernel images! I suspect you did an upgrade over the old 8.04 installation instead of a clean install.
to get rid of those old kernel images do this:
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-
So we leave the most reccent, which is 2.6.27-14-generic.
With this you will free up a lot of space.
You can also do this to remove additional space:
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
This removes unneeded packages.
