Ubuntu 16.04.3 and AMD R9-380X problems(Delayed boot and gpu fans spin at maximum speed)

Asked by Nikos

I installed ubuntu 16.04.3 and my gpu is R9 380X. Since the kernel update the amdgpu driver that worked out of the box in 16.04.2 doesnt work anymore even after i update ubuntu. I saw that AMD released a new version of AMDGPU-PRO driver with support for kernel 4.10 and i installed it but there are 2 problems.

When i choose ubuntu on GRUB the screen turns off for about 14 seconds and the GPU fans start spinning at maximum speed. After 14 seconds i see the login screen and the fans dont stop spinning.

So i am trying to find a solution to why the screen turns off (delayed boot) and why the fans spin at maximum speed. Am i doing something wrong? I searched a bit at google and i found that many people with the R9 380 have problems but i didnt find something that might help with my problem.

Basically the problem is that ubuntu hasnt been updated...in ubuntu 16.04.2 the amdgpu driver works out of the box.
