no sound

I have Ubuntu 8.10 - the Intrepid Ibex - released in October 2008, installed on my Toshiba Satelite laptop. I believe after updating my system, I lost my sound. I have tried all of the basics. It was working fine for a few months and then I just all of a sudden lost my sound. Please help.
