Thunderbird has hung, or crashed

Asked by peter ratcliffe

Since reinstalling Ubuntu 16.04 Thunderbird has been unreliable. When I start Thunderbird off the launcher it is completely different to how it was under Ubuntu 14.04. Previously it came up with the in box listing, from which I could read or move or delete a message. Now it starts with "title" page having access to read messages, send messages, with a menu column to the left, and etc. Now, when I start a blank in box page appears with a red text No results in the in the top menu row. None of the control buttons work and I am unable to move to anywhere else.

I have considered using Ubuntu Software from the launcher to remove and then install Thunderbird. Is this a good idea or would there be a better way.

Thanks for your help, Peter Ratcliffe

It looks like some parts of Thunderbird are working but the page that comes up first doesn't respond to anything. Output of your request is as above.

Thanks Andrew, hope this helps. Peter Ratcliffe

Since replying to your request for output I have tried finding a way round my problem and have discovered the following.

Accessing Thunderbird -safe-mode through a terminal brings up a blank in box page with the Filter Box button highlighted. The blank in box page which comes up when Thunderbird is started from the launcher does not show the top tool bar and so does not have a Quick Filter button. Both versions of this page have "No Results" in red. If I click on Quick Filter a new page comes up listing all 39 new e-mail messages since this problem started. However, I can't find a way back to the Thunderbird start page. Does this help?

Since I last heard from you I have been trying suggestions from help postings, and Thunderbird is working again. I have no idea what I have done to make this happen, nor why. However, back to where I was, thank you. As an aside, this current version of Thunderbird is not as good as previous versions I have used before.

Regards and thanks, Peter Ratcliffe
