External drive

If I have windows 10 already installed on my laptop can I download ubuntu on an external drive and dual boot/boot from that?
The drive is 2tb

Yes one can - however, you will be bottlenecked by the USB speed .
There are better alternatives ( ubuntu as a virtual machine in the Window's system - for one ) .

Just create free space on the USB and install. The installer does not care about the physical connection of a drive.

Just remember to do a full backup of your data before starting I case of catastrophe
