now that i am a converted ubuntu user, is there a p2p application i can get to download music, movies and tv shows like the torrents you have for windows users?

Ubuntu ships with a Torrent client. It's called Transmission

Remember that Canonical, Ubuntu and its community do not condone piracy in any form.

There is also a naive client for Spotify.
