Is there any difference between server and desktop iso editions?

Asked by Morteza

I want to know whether there is two different iso images of Ubuntu one for desktop and one for server?
If so, where could I find list of packeges that are included in each edition?
I have very slow internet connection, could I request to have server edition CDs sent by mail?

(I know the differene between server machines and clients ;) )

thanks in advance guys,
Morteza

Yes, they are two different images.

Please follow this link for alternate ways of getting the iso:

Concerning the differences, you can check them by looking at the manifest files (you can find them from the download lists).
Broadly speaking, the desktop edition is the server edition + desktop ;-)

Thanks Cesare!
Actually the problem is that I cannot find any option to choose the server edition! (when requesting CD delivery by mail).

And I have not a broadband connection to download the .iso image of Ubuntu server. This problem (my slow and unreliable internet connection) prevents me to install the Desktop and download additional packages from the Ubuntu website to convert my desktop to a server.
More broadly speaking, the desktop edition is the server one + desktop - (packages for wellknown services such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, BIND, APACHE, ...) ;) :D

P.S. :In Iran, most of the time you pay for example 3$ for 10 hours of a 28.8Kbps connection! A 700MB download will take ABOUT 191150 seconds or 53 hours!!! Simply the FREE Unbuntu server will cost me about 120~140$ and 54hours!!!

Why not the DVD edition then?

Here is a file listing:

Practically its the whole main repository + restricted + documentation.

The answer is simple!
Credit card!

Dear Cesare, you live in italy (am i right?) I live in Iran. With credit cards that I have (from Iranian banks) I cannot purchase the DVD. :(

Then I think you should get a CD through shipit and download Apache, mysql, etc.
Its only a 10/20 MB download

Unfortunately that's right! :(
Hope the server edition be available via shipit program in future!

Hi Morteza

If you send me your postal address via private mail (not via this form) I may send you a cd via snail mail (postal mail).
But it will need some weeks, snail mail outside Europe especially overseas will take a while.

You will find my E-Mail address at https://launchpad.net/~coastgnu/ or by clicking my nickname coastgnu shown above this message.
Also tell me which of the cd-images you would like to have please.

regards,
thomas

Moin moin Morteza

May be we can come to an agreement.
May be you will help people in your region using ubuntu and free software?
That would be acceptable for me. :-))

BTW.
Stupid me, seems that the email addresses are hidden.
Use <email address hidden> , we should continue our further coordination via private mail.

ich erlerne Dutsch! :D

I dont know what agreement we can come to?! :-/

But about the people, sure I will regardless of sending the CD! ;)
In Iran the copyright law is not applicable so many people use Micro$oft Windows at very low price about 1~2 USD or less! Currently I am trying to at least change Windows servers to Linux servers in different ISPs in my city.

OK, so I will answer bilingual (Zweisprachig) :-D

The agreement would be:
I will send you the CD, precisely I will pay the bill, and you will support free software in your region.
So we both will benefit, you will be happy to get an CD and I will be happy to help you to support free software.

But we really should continue via private e-mail, please answer via email (not via this web interface)
At least your postal adress shouldn't be posted in the wild wild web. So please send me an email to my email address

regards,
thomas
