Hello! You want to connect via wireless? If you need to connect the network card, give a look in the manual. If your computer is new to Dell provides technical support for this event is already come installed with ubuntu.

No, I am trying to connect with the cable modem. I contacted Dell and they told me I had to contact Ubuntu because the problem is not with the Dell laptop.

Is it wired via an Ethernet cable, USB or wireless? Are you connecting directly to the cable modem or to a router?

Can you go to a terminal and issue the following command:
ifconfig

Please come back here and paste the output.

Thank you!

Also, did you follow setup instructions for Comcast? Did you call Comcast first (never mention Linux on the phone to them). Just tell them you were presented with a screen that told you to call them to provision the modem.

The modem just may need to be provisioned correctly. Make sure your computer is connected directly to the modem, via Ethernet, when you do this. They will need the MAC address when you call them. It is found on the back of the modem.

This may be an easy fix.

Will this negatively affect things when I switch to my other laptop?

No, it just needs to be setup first. Confirm with Comcast that your account has been provisioned. It can be provisioned correctly as long as it has been connected to any computer.

When you go to setup your router, or if you ever buy a wireless/wired router, make sure you use the MAC address from the computer it was "provisioned" from (the one that was connected when you talked to ComCast). This is important.

So then I can switch back and forth once provisioned? It works fine on my other laptop.

No need to call Comcast then. It's provisioned. Do you not have a router? This may solve the issue entirely.

Can you give us the output of the command "ifconfig" (run from a terminal) when connected to your Comcast modem using the Dell Inspiron 910 mini with Ubuntu 8.04.01?

This will help us determine a course of action.

Also, after connecting the new P.C. via the ethernet cord -- unplug the modem from the power source, wait until all the lights come back on -- and then see if the Internet connection works. Sometimes it takes this.

After doing this, and waiting for all of the usual lights, issue the:

ifconfig

Command and let us know the output.

Thanks.

In the future a router might be good investment for your situation. This would allow you to connect both computers at once to the Internet using the same modem. It's basically sharing the same Internet connection. You can buy a wired, or wireless router, for around $40 - $60 at a local store or online (NewEgg.com, for example) and I don't foresee any problems.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask brad for more information if necessary.
