Desktop launches without any access to menus or program access

Asked by ghostrealm2000

Ubuntu 8.10

System boots up into desktop but with no taskbars visible or any access to programs. The desktop simply looks like a slideshow picture without any borders or icons to initiate. Right clicking brings no results. The only program that seems to work is the "capture screenshot" and only after hitting every key on the keyboard. This occurred after updating programs via update manager. One program failed to update being one of the educational packages. Have attempted "esc" function in grub to fix errors.

Moved to questions until a bug can be identified.

Have you tried to clear the gnome configuration settings in your home via TTY in case they are causing the problem?

Can you post your GDM and Xsession error logs too

During bootup do you get a menu with a few different Ubuntu options? Try the one that has "Recovery Mode" at the end of the line. Various of the options are worth trying especially "Clear some space", "Repair X-server (or X-windows)" and then, after learing some space try the "Repair broken packages"

Hopefully these should fix everything and are worth doing about once a month anyway.

If you don't get the bootup menu then when you next boot, around the time "Grub 1.5" appears it says "press esc to see menu" try pressing the escape key and you should see the menu that lets you get into recovery mode.

Good luck with this

Tom :)
