Err msg 'the package Linux-image-extra-4.8.0-53-generic needs to be installed but I can't find an archive for it'
OK on the help forums it says this file is no longer available and I should use a meta-package without telling me where to get it or how to install it.

Attaching screen shots does not work.
Due to the fact that the output is plain text, you can use copy and paste - in both directions.
Please open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and open your question document https:/
In the web browser mark the first of the commands with your mouse that it is shown in reverse color, press the right mouse button and select 'copy' in the pop-up window.
Switch (alt-tab) to the terminal window, press the right mouse button and select 'paste' from the pup-up window.
Press the 'enter' key if required to execute the command
Switch back to the web browser and proceed with the second command and so on.
Finally use the terminaal window's menu commands 'edit - select' and 'edit - copy' and paste everything into the #Message:' box of your question document.

You can clean up some of that with:
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
sudo dpkg -P `dpkg -l | grep ^rc | awk {'print $2'}`
Should make things a little clearer. It removes residual configuration from packages you have removed

Sorry; as a consequence of actionparsnip's commands which did not help for your current problem, but just did some cleanup, the file has been deleted and is no more available on your system.
Try the following in a terminal window:
cd ~
sudo dpkg -i ./linux-
and report the results.

Hello Manfred
Sorry I am not a computer expert - & I don't know how this command is to be
copied into the terminal window.
Does cd~ need to be copied in by itself?
Are the next 3 lines just one command including the hyperlink for launchpad
Is the final sudo line also another command to go in separately?

As already described in comment #3:
Use your question document on launchpad.net and not what your e-mail system shows. Most e-mail system break the commands by their attempt to limit the line length, and the commands no not work when copied from the e-mail system
Use https:/
Look at what I wrote in comment +#3 and use the same copy and paste for the three commands
cd ~
sudo dpkg -i ./linux-

Hello Manfred
Sorry to have taken so long but I am totally confused now, I don't know
what you want me to do.
I understand copy and paste that's OK
What I do not know even when logging into Ubunto One is where I find the
emails.
I also do not understand what you want me to put into the terminal window.
If I click the link to launchpad it comes up with the 'install' window
nothing happens if I click 'install'
I don't know if
cd~ is one command line
weget etc etc is another command line to go in after the above, if so why
does it contain a hyperlink
sudo is the last command line I guess.
I feel so stupid because it will be so obvious to you.

The question is
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
and the answers possibilities are "y" or "Y" (for yes), "n" or "N" for no, or just hitting the enter key and the default answer (the one in caps, i.e. "y" for yes) is taken. (0 or 1 or 1334 aren't valid answers.)

I pressed the enter key then Just to be certain I entered the sudo apt-get install -f command which said everything was done but some files needed 'autoremove' which gave me the following data.

How do I know if the problem has been fixed if Ubuntu 16.10 is no longer supported. How do I get any updates??

Your original problem ("package ... needs to be reinstalled") is solved. There is no such error message in your last output any more.
Next steps:
Support for Ubuntu 16.10 has ended last week, and you should change over to a supported Ubuntu release - in your case the most reasonable upgrade is to 17.04 (zesty).
Prerequisite is that your current version is up-to-date, but apparently your are missing the latest package updates from 16.10 ("...and 1334 not to upgrade..."). I assume that this is a consequence of the ("package ... needs to be reinstalled") problem.
I suggest that you run the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
to install the updates. (It may take a while to download and install all those packages.)
As soon as this is complete (and after a reboot to activate the newest version of the kernel) you can initiate the release upgrade to 17.04 with the command
sudo do-release-upgrade
If you need further help, do not hesitate to ask.

What have you done with your package management configuration?
Your system is still Ubuntu 16.10, but you are already using the repositories for 17.04!
Did you manually edit the /etc/apt/
This has the potential to create all kinds of dependency conflicts (and it does as you can see from your per problem).

Hello
Possibly a month ago I tried to update to 17.04 but it wouldn't do it, I
assumed that it was the same problem that prevented the updates working for
the various other software.
I certainly do NOT have the PC skills to manually edit a file. I can only
think that some of the 17.04 upgrade was successful but not all of it.
Sorry to give you so much trouble, it certainly is not deliberate.

Ok. Let's hope that the wrong entries in the configuration file have not yet done too much harm.
Issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
In the editor that opens replace all occurrences of "zesty" by "yakkety" (you can use search and replace).
Delete the last five lines (starting with line 51 "deb http://
save the file and close the editor.
And then issue the command
sudo apt-get update
and report the results.

No output on "sudo dpkg --audit" is a good sign, because that command will show problems with the package management system.
Finally you have a system that is fully updated on Ubuntu 16.10.
Because of 16.10 being already in end-of-life status, your next target must be to do the release-upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04.
This is done with the command
sudo do-release-upgrade
or with help of the update-manager application.
You have to be aware that this will download several hundred MB of data and may take a few hours in total.
In any case you should consider creating backup copies of your important files to an external storage medium - just to be on the safe side.

Manfred
Many, many thanks, problem solved. All failed updates disappeared from my software updater.
I will do the upgrade to 17.04 later, maybe tonight. If there are any problems that will a different question to post.
So once again many thanks for ALL of your help.
Alan
