Stuck on Boot - Maybe ATI card related

Asked by Kiyo

I Just installed Ubuntu 7.04 and I can only get it to boot in single user or failsafe terminal. X boots fine in single user.

In all other startups I get stuck with only a background and a working cursor after the login screen.

The log file (below) makes me think it might be graphics card (Radeon 9000, it's for a laptop) related.

Does anyone have any suggestions? details answers are appreciated as I'm pretty new to the whole linux thing.

Xorg.0.log (there was also a Xorg.0.log.old but I won't post):

Actually, you Xorg log file doesn't hint to any problem with your video card.
I think we should find something more interesting in dmesg.

You can also have a look at the boot messages pressing ALT-F1 during boot.

Also there nothing out of the "ordinary".
I noted that you say to have a 9000 video card, Xorg reports a 9100 though.
Can you show me what is reported by a lspci -v command?
Can you also show me what is in .xsession-errors?

Again thanks so much for your help. I'd drought it's possible to get help like this for windows!!

Could you perhaps repost the output of lspci -v? I'm afraid the first time didn't go through.
Can you also tell me what is reported on the screen if you run this command:

sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart

And please also tell me if there is anything in /var/run/dbus/ before and after the previous command (If there is a pid file please tell me the number it contains) and finally the result of the command:

ps -A | grep dbus-daemon

Thanks.

I see two problems:

1) The video hardware is reporting that it is a 9100, you said it is a 9000, therefore one of you is wrong.
2) The Avahi daemon is not started at boot, and I don't know why.

First, I want to see if by solving 2) we can also have the x-server up and running. Reboot and try again with a command:

sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart

if all the starting messages ends in [OK] check with ps -A | grep dbus-daemon that you have 3 processes running and that the pid of one of those correspond to the content of the file /var/run/dbus/pid. If that is so give this command:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

and tell me what is the outcome.

After sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart:

the first time one of the messages reads [fail] but if you do it again they all read [ok].

in either case (last command once or twice) there are only 2 processes running after the ps -A command but one does in fact have the same pid as /var/run/dbus/pid

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart, This brings me to the login screen and which yields a fully functional desktop!!!!!

If I give the the gdm restart command without giving the dbus restart command I again get a fully functional desktop but I get: "internal error, failed to initialize HAL!"

Lastly, I'm 95% sure I have a 9000 (I checked on the Toshiba website) but alas i can't be positive as I lost the ati sticker long ago and I'm not brave enough to open her up.

we seem to be getting somewhere

Lets see first what is the problem at boot that blocks the Avahi daemon.

Can you tell me what is the content of these files:

/etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf
/etc/avahi/hosts

And what files (if any) are reported by this command:

ls -l /etc/avahi/services/*.service

Last, check in your syslog the error messages associated to avahi and dbus and paste them here.

Thanks, I would also like to have a look at your /etc/hosts and /etc/network/interfaces files.
Just as a temporary workaround solution, I would also like you to remove the Network Manager. Do it with these commands:

sudo apt-get remove network-manager network-manager-gnome

/etc/hosts:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 Schrodinger

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

/etc/nework/interfaces

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

auto eth2
iface eth2 inet dhcp

auto ath0
iface ath0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

I removed network manager but to no avail, it still won't boot normally.

We can try to remove the ip6 lines from in /etc/hosts, its just a shot in the dark though.
I'm afraid we have stumbled against a bug in dbus, most probably just a timing one because if we stop and restart the daemon then everything works as it should.
Since you have just installed, I can only suggest to reinstall 7.04 from scratch. It will be worth also to check the CD for defects before (also the image you burned just to make sure).
If by reinstalling it doesn't work again, you should report this as a bug.

so remove all the lines:

fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

????

I've already tried to reinstall it before I came here and the CD.

I've heard of people writing custom boot sequences, is it possible to do this so that it restarts dbus automatically?

Thankyou so much for your help

_removing ip6_

Yes, and also this one:

::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback

_enabling/disabling avahi daemon_

Can you also tell me what is in:

/etc/default/avahi-daemon

Try to change it, from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0 and see if it is still not working.

_custom scripts at bootup_

To add your own script at bootup you have to:

1) install the script in the /etc/init.d/ directory. Lets call this script pippo (make sure there is not a script there already with the same name).
2) make the script executable with chmod +x pippo
3) insert the script in the boot sequence using the command update-rc.d pippo defaults
