Which version of mysql (server and/or client) installed? Kubuntu, KDE desktop requires mysql 5.1 for akonadi application, and akonadi application is needed for kmail. If you don't need kmail, remove akonadi and kmail from synaptic with their dependencies. Try again.

Can you help with this problem?
