There are plenty of guides available on line and in book stores. Keep in mind that if you are already familiar with another operating system, some things will be familiar and easy to learn while other things will seem completely backwards or impossible, until you learn to think about them the way Linux/Unix handles them. Some very good resources for getting started with Linux can be found at http://linuxbasics.org and http://tille.garrels.be/training/tldp/. These offer excellent complete courses that present Linux from the ground up. Be sure do more than just read - do things in Linux, even if you are very familiar with them in other operating systems. Find some Linux web sites that you like and bookmark them for times when you need some extra help.

For starters I recommend learning a few shell commands (ls, cd, man, info su, sudo, logout, reboot), how the root user is used, the basic structure of the file system, how to install software with packaged managers and without. From there you can learn what you want to know and how to do what you want to do with Linux.

There are many GUIs available for Linux. Two of the most popular are Gnome and KDE. I prefer Gnome, but KDE is more Windows-like. Try out a Linux distribution that has a LiveCD version such as Ubuntu, Knoppix, Fedora 8 or 9 and spend some time getting to know the GUI environment. Go to http://linux.org/dist to get a list of Linux distributions and their descriptions. Try a few and decide what you are most comfortable using, then go with that. You'll have a lot of fun learning and just poking around, especially when things start to click and you can do everything you can with you current OS. Have fun!

Can you help with this problem?
