I am trying to attach my LITEON DVD RW TO MY Laptop

Asked by sngsf

The problem is that when I hook it up, it mounts fine, I can even see what is on the disk in the drive, the movie player even opens up. Now that is where my problem comes into play, when the movie tries to play I am getting an error stating COULD NOT READ FROM SOURCE. At first I though it was something from the drive so I tried a data disk and mp3 movie and that worked fine. DO you have any ideas?

On the command line / terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) issue the following commands to ensure you have the proper support for what you are trying to do.

Ensure libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 are installed with the proper plugins to support what you are trying to do by issuing the following command in a Terminal:
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libdvdread3 gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Then execute the command:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
*This may require a restart.

Do you have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed? If not, you may also want to install it.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

You can also use Synaptic to install these packages via the graphic interface, however the command-line will be easier. It will also be needed to execute the second command above.

I would also like you to see this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs
The DVD may be encrypted, which many DVDs are now-a-days...and may require these extra libraries. I'm just trying to cover all of your bases.

Regards,

Craig

P.S. - Try playing the DVD in VLC. I'm not pushing for another movie app, I'm just trying to test out another application. If Totem continues to not work or xine continues to not function please let us know. I have had mp3s not work in one app, but work in 3 others. Sometimes it is just settings, plugins or library support.
