VLC audio only (no video) since Ubuntu 17.04

Asked by Matthew Owen

Ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 17.04, VLC hasn't played videos correctly. Audio only, no video. I've tried tinkering with output modes (Tools>Preferences>Video), but at best this displays a 1/4 sized video, and even that stopped working when I disabled, re-enabled video track (Video>Video Track).

I've followed other instructions to download restricted add on's (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras), but that hasn't fixed the issue either.

I don't see anything on the message boards about 17.04 and VLC, if this has been solved I'll happily close this out.

Update:

OK, now suddenly it works. Restarting after downloading the restricted updates didn't work at first.

However, Under Simple Preferences in the Display section, I selected OpenGLX video output (XCB). It's possible that made it work.

I can't intelligently say that solved it for sure. More info from advanced Ubuntu folks would be appreciated.

I'd say try it a little while. If it's still OK after a few days then please mark as solved

Since it's working now, and since I documented what I did, marking this as SOLVED. Hope it works for the rest of you.
