Put the Ubuntu disc into the CD drive and reboot your computer.
Provided that your BIOS boot sequence is set to detect the CD drive before the hard drive you should get a "Live" version of Ubuntu. After deciding to install, you press the install button on the screen.

Is Ubuntu going to be your only operating system?

Yep, if you like to have also Windows on your system, install Windows first. And then it will be very easy to install Ubuntu.

Hope it helps.

I think crc error might mean the Cd doesn't work? Can you download and make a new one?

If you can boot up from the Cd and choose "Try Ubuntu without making changes to my Hard-drive" then do you get to a working desktop? It should be easy to install from there too :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
