Dell Mini 9 Webcam Sound not working with ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Detailedghost

I bought my Dell a couple weeks ago and got it yesterday and started to play around with it. I hated the "Dellbuntu" that came with it so I installed ubuntu 8.10 on it. Everthing is working fine except my webcam. My webcam will pick up on the visual stuff for cheese and skype, but it can't pick up any sound. I can hear sound from youtube and movies and stuff so thats fine, but when I try and say something into the microphone it doesn't work. I've looked everywhere for a solution with no avail, and I was hoping maybe I could get an answer here. I really appreciate all the help I get, thanks.

P.S. Also, meebo doesn't detect the camera at all which is weird too.

Nope, I already checked out the documentation for the dell mini 9 ubuntu 8.10 install. There is no mentioning of how to get the mic on the webcam to work on meebo, skype, or any other program using the webcam.

I've continued to play around with it and I managed to get the mic to pick up voice but it does it constantly and no audio will record or be picked up in any of the programs i use. I've tried switching the volume sliders around and uninstalling pulseaudio but programs still can't pick up on my voice. Help please! Thanks.

Have you considered installing the eeebuntu netbook remix? I know that it is for the Asus eeepc but everything works. My day here is at an end - I will be back in the morning. In the meantime read this site:

Well I was wondering if its possible to fix the problem under 8.10 for a couple reasons. For one, a bunch of people are having the same problem and also I just want 8.10 to work better, I really like it. Besides, I hate having to go through the whole os reinstall process, its painful. None of the forums I have checked (including the ones you gave me) have found a solution to the problem, so it must be a coding problem. I'll be honest, I'm no programmer so even if i looked through the code it would look like chinese for me. I'll keep trying out stuff, but I would appericate if someone could investigate the coding for me. I am a coding noob. Thanks for everything.

"a bunch of people are having the same problem" - Where is this bunch of people?

Do you have "Microphone Capture" and "Mic Boost" enabled? Right click on the loudspeaker icon, select Open Volume Control and open the "Switches" tab.

Can you help with this problem?
