New to Ubuntu-Want to dual boot

Asked by xevious22

Hey guy's

I am considering loading Ubuntu onto my system but I have a question. I am currently running windows XP with 1 hard drive, I would like to run both XP and Ubuntu on the same machine what I want to know is what exactly do I have to do to ensure I can have a dual boot option, also I do not have a windows XP install disk so I am being very cautious about installing a new OS without knowing how it will affect my existing OS

There is a lot of documentation on the web if you google, e.g.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

I have read it and it still doesn't satisfy me, from what I understand from the literature is that when I begin the installation process it will automatically partition my hard drive and I can boot either OS when I start up, I have a feeling I am wrong in that though. I am also still unclear as to how easy it is to uninstall Ubuntu if I choose

Yes, it will partition the hard drive and creat a boot menu, that's correct. If you want to uninstall Ubuntu, then you basically have to format your Ubuntu partition and re-allocate that space.

Alright seems simple enough, I suppose I should just man up and go ahead with it. I always get nervous when doing stuff to my baby. Anyways one last thing, when or if I wish to set everything back to normal where to I go to unpartition and uninstall Ubuntu, will that be taken care of through XP? Ubuntu?

You have to uninstall in Windows or when you boot from the live CD. You can not uninstall while you are using the operating system itself because you are deleting your own system files.

Maybe one thing you could do is to look at the current partitions on your HD. Depending on your machine, this might be different. There must be a Windows program that lets you look at those, called something like "System" "Partitioner".

Perhaps try a LiveCd session first. Just bootup the Cd and choose to "Try without making changes to my machine"
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

When you get to a desktop go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Partition Editor

This gui makes it quite easy to delete your Ubuntu partition and then resize your Windows to take up the whole drive again. Beware though because it's also quite easy to delete your XP side and everything!

Anyway, it's nice to look at as long as you're careful not to hit delete while looking! heheheh

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
