Unable to use Applications when requires root

Asked by Tootiecat

Whenever I try and run a program such as GParted or KDE Partition manager, I can't run them with administrator privileges... I tried running under Sudo, and Gksudo and neither work... Can I log in on a special root account that will let me do this?

Why do you want to run gparted etc as sudo?
You can run them normally without being sudo.

Accidental button press, sorry...
I need to create a separate partition so that I can install XP and dual boot. It is true that I can run the application, but I can't complete any needed operations without it...

Normally when you try to run them from

System - Administration - Partition Editor

it will ask for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Is it not asking for the password or is it otherwise misbehaving?

Thnks and regards from
Tom :)

Is it failing to create a partition?

@Shane It is not failing to make a partition, it won't let me do anything that I need to do in order to do what I want to do.

@Tom Whenever I go to that menu item, it never asks for a password or prompts me that it doesn't have root privileges. Tom, on the second one I am following a guide to get XP on Ubuntu after Ubuntu is installed, that sems to be problematic and hard. So, I was thinking, should I install XP over top of everything and then install Ubuntu 8.10 and upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04? I want to do this because I'm finding that I hate running a VM in order to get my iPod Touch synced and I would like to jailbreak it for once. (You can't jailbreak in a VM.) I also am having problems with WiFi. I worked in 8.10, but I figured that if I got it to work after getting it to work in 8.10, I could then upgrade to 9.04,and it would work. (Wifi Problem Here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/64760 ) I want to follow the easiest path and I think this is the best one.

Also, I'd like to know how to 'Explicitly Enable EXT4' or should I wait 'till 9.10 and do a clean install?

I have done my research and am following through on my plan. But I won't be using EXT4; I'll stick with EXT3. I will mark as closed once I finish getting all of this configured correctly. Wish me luck!

ext3 & 8.10 seem best plans. 9.04 is maybe not quite ready yet. I'm on 8.10 - at least my machine is ;)

Keeping what you do have and following the guides would be my preference but it may well turn out to be easier just to wipe and reinstall both this time. Recovering from a Windows install is a lot easier than it looks. It's another of those things that difficult to explain but fairly easy to do.

There is of course only one right way to do this and that's your own way.

Good luck with this but i'm sure you'll struggle through just fine.

Tom :)

Thanks! It worked, and I figured out my WiFi problem... It took a while, but it was worth it!
