Driver for Epson Perfection V330 Photo

Asked by peter ratcliffe

Since I reinstalled Ubuntu 16.10 I can't get my Epson V330 scanner to work. I have tried following your advice in answer to question 267710 without success. I got as far as accepting the license but the next page is different - it doesn't list the expected downloads. After that, I got lost. I have also googled for Epson Scanner drivers without finding a site to take me there. I guess there have been changes to Epson support since 2015.

Grateful for your help, Peter Ratcliffe

Considering your install is EOL next year and is a new install, I can recommend you remove the install and reinstall with Ubuntu 16.04.

16.04 is LTS and supported until April 2021.

Seems you need the package iscan and iscan-data (match the version numbers and architecture of your Ubuntu install)

1. Correction to actionparsnip's comment: Ubuntu 16.10 will go out of support this MONTH. You have to upgrade to 17.04 (supported until January 2018) in due course, or revert to a new install of 16.04 (with support until April 2021)

2. If you access http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX&productName=V330 and click on the search button and on the 'Download' button on the next page, and accept the license on the next, you should end up on a page with a big box "Linux Scanner Download"

Use the Link "Package Download Page" and on the next page download the "deb" bundle fitting to your OS architecture (I assume that you have installed the 64bit version of Ubuntu).

Sorry, I still think it's June. Yes this month it dies.

Manfred,

I must have missed something. I have followed your para 2 guide and have got as far as download the "deb" bundle for 64 bit. Clicking on iscan comes up with the expected iscan screen but this says additional software needed, install. Clicking on install doesn't do anything. Can you point me to the missing link?

I also googled for Epson drivers and was told I need epkowa for a V330 scanner, which I don't understand.

What was the extension of the file that you have downloaded?
What did you do with it?

what happened when you clicked open?
Which program started by that?

as far as I can see from the readme, you have to issue these commands:

   tar xaf iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb.tar.gz
   cd iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb
   ./install.sh

Manfred,

I am not aware of anything happening when I clicked open, nor do I know what, if any, programs were opened.

Your commands entered in a terminal gave these answers
:tar: iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

cd iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb
bash: cd: iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb: No such file or directory

 ./install.sh
bash: ./install.sh: No such file or directory

All entered from peter@peter-desktop:~$. It looks like there is a bit missing?

It seems that the downloaded file on your disk is named differently or it is located in a different directory.
You have to use the real file name in the tar command.

Manfred, I'm completely lost now. Following your instructions of the thirteenth a download file appears as
iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb.tar.gz
which is then marked as read only. Location is shown as an icon black square/
I don't know where the icon comes from as I can't call it up from anywhere else. Hope you can make something out of this. I don't know if this is connected. Sending an e-nail brings up an error "unable to find server. Incoming e-mails work normally.

In which directory is that iscan...deb.tar.gz file located? In your home directory, in a "Downloads" subdirectory or somewhere else?

For the mail problem you should check the settings of the mail program that you use.

The iscan ... deb.tar.gz is in Home/Downloads. It describes itself as an archive and is 603.2kB

cd Downloads
tar xaf iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb.tar.gz
cd iscan-perfection-v330-bundle-1.0.1.x64.deb
./install.sh

Manfred,I'm confused and, I suspect, missing something. Assuming I might need sudo at some time I input the strings you suggested. Simplescan now works. Thank you so much. However, is simple scan the same as iscan? When I tried it to scan a document I got a copy on the screen but not the choice of file or print. I guess this counts as a result. Which application did you try, where you did not get a possibility to save or print?

iscan is a scanning application provided by Epson.
simple-scan is a generic open-source scanning application.

iscan should work well with your Epson device in any case, but I would expect that also simple-scan works with your scanner.

I suggest that you try both and use the one that works better.

Manfred, Iscan is working OK this morning. Perhaps it just needed a lie-in!
A big thank you for all your help. What would we do without you.
Many thanks, Peter Ratcliffe
