How many files are used by packages?

When I install packages or do things in Synaptic it sometimes tells me how many package files are installed. How can I get this information without installing a new package or modifying any existing packges?

I am using this information to compare installations with new file systems such as JFS and ReiserFS, so any additional information of what programs give stats would be appreciated.

apt-cache depends <packagename>

where

<packagename> is a package like amarok
