Mouse cursor flickers and disappears intermittently on HDMI connected monitor

Asked by skorasaurus

For what appears to be several deciseconds or small fractions of a seconds, my mouse cursor will disappear or change its transparency.

I use 2 HP EliteDisplay E242 monitors on this 16.04 machine that is a HP Z240 .

This behavior also only occurs on the monitor that is plugged via HDMI.

The other monitor has a VGA cord and then connected to a DVI inputter which is plugged into the nvidia Quadro K620 card, displays as the mouse cursor as intended.

My full terminal output of step 2 from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure is at https://paste.ubuntu.com/24957643/

Try Settings/display and turn off the monitors not in use (click the monitor and then click off).

If necessary boot in recovery mode.

Hi João Miguel Lopes Moreira, thank you for the assistance. Unfortunately, I simultaneously use both monitors. I've tried turning both monitors on and off which no change in symptoms.

I also booted into recovery mode and then select failsafeX. There, I received a prompt stating that my system was in low-graphics mode and "Screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly" and no mouse cursor appeared, so I was stuck.

I have also tried different USB ports for my mouse and have tried different mouse, same results.

Sorry if this isn't the proper protocol (because I do see that there's dozens of people subscribed), but I still haven't figured this out just yet.

I should also include that I have a z240 HP computer and I have added the 4.10.x kernel and still experience the same problems.
