cannot claim usb device iphone 16.04

"cannot claim usb device" appears when iPhone with iOS v 10.3.2 is connected to a laptop with 16.04 installed. It used to work with 12.04 on another computer but stopped working there. It appears it may have been when iOS v 10 was installed. Win 10 picture viewer reads the iPhone fine on the dual boot machine with 16.04 on it.
