Autorotate Screen On HP Pavillion x360

Asked by MaxMcByte

Hello Ubuntu-ites;

I am running Ubuntu

Release 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 4.10.0-21-generic x86_64
MATE 1.18.0

on a HP Pavilion x360 (*** WHICH IS A CONVERTIBLE ***)

which came pre installed with Windows 10, I am dual booting.

When in Windows, the rotation happens seamlessly, no buttons to push or scripts to run.

I want the same abilities when running Ubuntu. Yes, I can switch to something other desktop besides MATE if necessary.

This device (HP Pavilion x360) apparently has sensors to determine the position that Window is using to auto-rotate the screen.

Question;
How to accomplish the above behavior?
What desktop to run?
What kernel to run?

And any other insights you may have.

I have read some of the other posts and it does not appear to be a definitive way.

Thank you for any help.

I appreciate your rapid response and I already seen your originak post.

I was thinking that at the time of yor post which was in 2016 that maybe things had changed as convertibles are here to stay.

I have *** some *** coding skills and am wondering if it is worth attacking this problem of making Ubuntu recognize the sensors and act accordingly. But I would be in over my head.

Is this even something on Ubuntu/Linux radar?

Again, thanks for responding.

(Note, I am typing this response on my Android which is runnung some form of Linux under the hood and and it rotates the screen accordingly. So how difficult could it be!)

All I can suggest is to report a bug.

Do other distributions support rotation (obviously not Debian or Ubuntu based)?

AFTER SOME MORE RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED THAT THE GNOME3 DESKTOP WORKS WELL ENOUGH. IT AUTO ROTATES JUST FINE. THE TOUCH PAD IS DEACTIVATED AS WELL AS THE KEYBOARD. I USE FIREFOX AND INSTALLED THE AD ON "GRAB AND DRAG".

THE ONLY ISSUE I HAVE FOUND THUS FAR IS THAT THE KEYBOARD HAS THE THE CAPS ON.

I AM CLOSING THIS ISSUES AS THIS SOLVED MY PROBLEM.
