<class system error>( E the package virtualbox-5.1 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it

Upon attempting to install the latest vbox the laptop froze and had to switch it off through the switch button. Synaptic will not operate and neither remove or purge will remove it stating it does not exist, nor gdebi will install it stating it needs to be reinistalled. Please advise

apt-cache policy `dpkg -l | grep virtualbox | awk {'print $2'}`; lsb_release -a; uname -a
