Linux for older computers

Asked by jdl-tech

Q1. I have an older HP Pavillion we use for our children. They deleted files, defragged, deleted some more, etc, makig it unusable. I refomatted the hard drive, put XP on it but it won't work. Rather than spending money and time on fixing it I thought to try Linux. This would be my first...
The BIOS lists a 'Celeron Processor 766Mhz/60Mhz'; 128MB ram; Win 95, 98, 2000 and "Other".
Would Ubuntu work on this computer or should I use another?

Q2. I also have a 486 based PC, 50 Mhz uprocessor, 4MB ram running Win3.1. What could I use for it, that would make it usable in today's world?

Q3. In the 70's mainframes had the brains, users merely had a keybord and screen. Is there a way I can network these older units, maybe even the 486?

I would appreciate finding out what can be done.

Sincerely,

Jack.
