RT2860 wireless chipset (RaLink Device [1814:0781]) not working in Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by D. Brown

I have the aforementioned wireless card in an Acer Aspire 4730Z (64 bit, Intel dual core 2.0 Ghz). I run Ubuntu 8.10. I need the driver for this card. Unfortunately, all my searching has turned up nothing but Windows drivers. Does anyone know of an Ubuntu driver for this card? Thanks.

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable.

Then please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --netcard
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

It's not a tip. :-) I am first asking for more detailed info about your wireless setup.

Depending on the output from your pc, I might be able to provide a solution.

That is why this thread was in the "needs information" status.

It would be better if you can send the results now so I can help you now.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Believe me, I would like to give you the results now. Unfortunately, my wireless router is at work. I run off of mobile internet at home. As soon as possible, I will run the script and post the results. Thanks for your continuing interest.

Hello again, Mark!

I ran the commands and this is what I received (I borrowed a friend's wireless).

Hi,

Please try this installation procedure:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/210725/comments/152

- Download rt2860-source_1.8.0.0-3_all.deb from

http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/rt2860-source/download

wget http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/r/rt2860-source/rt2860-source_1.8.0.0-3_all.deb

- install source .deb:

sudo dpkg -i rt2860-source_1.8.0.0-3_all.deb

- compile
sudo aptitude install debhelper module-assistant
sudo module-assistant auto-install rt2860

- install the module
sudo modprobe rt2860sta
this should activate the new wireless interface without reboot

- to load the module automatically on each reboot, add rt2860sta to /etc/modules

sudo gedit /etc/modules

- add the following line to the end of the /etc/modules file:
rt2860sta

- reboot and retest wireless

- if that does not work, you should consider upgrading to Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04 alpha) Alpha 6, which should support your RT2860 wireless card out of the box.

Download location here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/alpha-6/jaunty-desktop-i386.iso

Mark
