Try with madwifi drivers

1. install dependencies

linux-restricted-modules gcc g++ linux-headers build-essential

lspci | grep Wireless

sudo ifconfig ath0 down

sudo rmmod ath_pci

wget http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3942-20090205.tar.gz

sudo tar -zxvf madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3861-20080903.tar.gz

make

sudo make install

sudo gedit /etc/modules add in the end "ath_pci"

sudo reboot

Go to http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-get-atheros-ar5007eg-or-ar242x-wireless-cards-may-be-other-models-working-in-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex.html and follow one of the methods there. I think I used method 2 on my laptop and it has not missed a beat since re connecting via wireless

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable.

Then please follow this procedure (in order to gather troubleshooting info):

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --netcard
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

# Please try this Atheros driver installation procedure:

# First under System/Administration/HardwareDrivers, disable both the Atheros HAL and the Atheros wireless thing and then reboot.

# Then from a terminal type (press enter key after each line)

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install build-essential subversion

cd ~

mkdir madwifi

cd madwifi

svn co https://217.24.1.142/madwifi/branches/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6

cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6

make

sudo make install

sudo gedit /etc/modules

# Now add the Atheros kernel module ath_pci to the list of modules to be automatically loaded at boot by adding

ath_pci

# to the end of the /etc/modules file. (Gedit editor automatically opens)

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

# Now add the following 3 lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file:

ndiswrapper
ath5k
ath9k

Now you can reboot and it should work.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

Try disabling encryption on the wireless router and enabling SSID broadcasting on the router. These are options you need to set on the wireless router itself using a webinterface.

Also try connecting to your wireless router via wifi using a different pc . See if that works.

If you can access the wireless router using the wireless connection on a different pc, then I recommend reinstalling Ubuntu 8.10 from a LiveCD session onto the problematic pc and then following my madwifi compilation instructions, which work perfectly for everybody else who is using the the AR242X wireless chipset.

If the madwifi procedure does not work, this indicates to me that there are already too many driver conflicts on your pc which are getting in our way.

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

I found someone with the same model and make of laptop and with the same Atheros chipset. Check out the thread here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/67155

He got the wireless issue solved by following these instructions:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-networking-3/asus-laptop-and-wireless-on-ubuntu-intrepid-681923/

Regards,

Mark
