Nvidia GeForce2 Go driver, PC won't shut down.

Asked by ttamhew

I have been scouring the internet for solution to this problem for a few months now and although I have found people with similar problems none of the posted solutions have solved the issue. Thanks in advance for any help!

The Problem:
---------------------------------
Everything works fine when I have the VESA drivers installed. However when I install the Nvidia drivers the problems begin:
1.) Computer starts fine. Grub runs fine. Ubuntu splash screen loads fine, and boots.
2.) When the display switches from the splash screen, instead of displaying the login screen the display becomes corrupted: half of the screen is orange (login background color), the other half is black. If I then press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace the normal login screen is displayed.
3.) Everything then works fine, no display issues. I can change the resolution and use application in fullscreen, no probs.
4.) When i try to shut down the system starts to shutdown, however at the point where normally the shutdown splash screen is displayed the screen simply goes blank and the system seems completely unresponsive. There is no HDD activity after this point and the system will sit in this state indefinitely. I'm usually want to throw something large and solid in the general direction on my laptop at this point, but usually opt for manually powering it off.
5.) Also if i press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace at any point after having pressed it a login, the screen again simply goes blank and the system seems completely unresponsive.

I have tried using various drivers such as the nvidia legacy drivers, but always have the same problem. The same thing happened in Ubuntu 6.06. I was hoping feisty would solve the issue but alas! I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and still learning lots. Could i be a X server or Gnome problem? Are there log files i should be looking at? If so how do i find them?

My Laptop:
---------------------------------
Dell Inspiron 2650
2Ghz Processor
512mb RAM
Nvidia GeForce2 GO (32mb)
Dual boot: Windows XP/Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Thanks for your question, you have tryed some driver, suce as NV, Nvidia and Vesa. With Vesa all works ok, with other no. Right ??? If you want to know your xor.log file you can open this directory: /var/log in this share there are all logs file of your system. To have some information, you can change your driver from Vesa to NV and than post the file xorg.log after your boot vith NV driver or Nvidia.

Thanks

Hi.

I had the exactly same problem.
I found the solution on Ubuntu-fr :

- Edit /etc/modprobe.d/options and add this line :
options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=2

- Then do :
$ sudo modprobe -r nvidia
$ sudo modprobe nvidia

- Finally, restart X and gdm

First of all, sorry for my lack of communication after having posted the question in the first place. Unfortunately I have been working a great deal since having posted the original question. Infact I have had to remove ubuntu from my laptop (sacrilege I know, I fell bad for having done so) to make room for some bloated CAD software. As of yet i have not tried to reinstall ubuntu. However I shall soon be moving to a new computer system which will free up my laptop to become exclusively a linux machine. Hopefully at this point I will be able to start finding a solution again. Till then I'm afraid I'm still at a loss. If anyone does find a solution or narrows down the problem i would love to hear from you.

Thanks ttamhew

I have same problem; meaning: Not able to change the resolution from 1600 by 1200 pixels to a lower resolution without reducing the size of the screen ( with a black border ). Has anybody found a real solution ?

System is
Dell Inspiron 8200
Windows XP Pro

Video Card
GE Force2 GO
Integrated RAMDAC
32MB
Bios Version: 3.11.01.44.D1

Thanks.
