Wireless Huawei E160G can't connect Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by hughd

Installed Ubuntu 8.10 from a downloaded CD onto an older Samsung notebook(SENS x15plus). Ubunut only - not a dual boot setup. Didn't have an internet connection. Bought E160G wireless modem using three.com.au
Activated and registered modem using a friend's XP machine.
Can't get E160G working on Ubuntu 8.10 notebook.
Have spent a day reading forums and questions. Realize I am out of my depth. Can anyone help, please?
See others in forums are not having this problem. Tried a suggestion to reinstall Ubuntu with modem connected but because I made the CD to run on XP it won't autorun. so that wouldn't work.

p.s. yes, i am new to ubuntu. but i will learn. am determined to get this working.

Plug it in then click the network icon in the corner, then click configure.
A wizard will appear select your country and network and it should connect.

It doesn't seem to recognize the "3" network. It lists 3G Optus, and then a bunch of wireless connections that it detects in the neighbourhood, but doesn't "see" that a "3" USB modem is plugged in. I'm trying to reinstall Ubuntu with it plugged in but my wife is back in town after a five week absence...so I'll try again tomorrow morning. Also I don't know what kind of encryption the network has, but I'll call their tech support tomorrow.

Maybe your problem is that it's not a "wireless" but a "mobile broadband". E.g., do a right-click on the network icon, go to "edit connections" and you have a "mobile broadband" tab.

Did you google? How about this?

I reinstalled Ubuntu with the USB inserted. It now finds "three" as a network. You're right. It is mobile broadband. Will reconfigure in the morning. Thanks for the help to both Bernhard and shane fagan. Seems the biggest problem is me.
