Can Not Boot After Install Intrepid On Dell Optiflex 320

Asked by sangprabv

First try Intrepid 64 bit installation ended with freezed screen during boot. And after adding acpi=off parameter in the installation first menu make me successfully installed it. But it freezed again during the first boot. Alrite, maybe I need to edit the menu.lst manually. So then I edit it using LiveCD by doing:
$sudo -s
#mkdir -p /media/hdd
#mount /dev/sda1 /media/hdd
#vim /media/hdd/boot/grub/menu.lst
And add acpi=off in the defoptions directive. Save it and restart it. Guess what? Still freezed. So please help me to make it work. TIA

Please try the 32bit version. It's much better and runs faster on a 64bit machine than on a 32bit machine. Unlike some other OS's the 32bit version has fully support for multi-threading and working with dual/quad core and all that multiple-Cpu type stuff. The only thing it doesn't do at all is use more than 2Gb of Ram. As Ubuntu almost never needs even 1Gb of ram it's not really relevant.

In Windows the OS's tend to be really heavy and need more Ram just for the basics. Also linux tends to use ram a lot more intelligently for heavy programs too. Also in Windows they are a bit new to using multiple cpu's but Unix and linux have had it in mind for many years rather than just patching it on top of 64bit versions only.

Goo dluck and regards from
Tom :)

Actually I had tested 32bit before pick up the 64bit version. With 32bit it can't install Intrepid on Dell Optiflex 320 at all. Even I had changed the boot option from installation menu. Some articles said that it's about the SATA HDD interface that cause the problem. Is it a dead end?

Sangprabv the successful acpi=off parameter is valid only for the install cd and i think you must repeat it temporary to boot from the installed kernel and then write it as default boot option into the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and then do an update-grub to store it as permanet boot parameter for this and future incoming kernel.

So please try the acpi=off by pressing esc when you see the GRUB row and on the first kernel row press "e" and append the acpi=off to the end of the kernel line to make your installed Ubuntu kernel boot.

Please tell if this is working fro you then you need to write this parameter into the /boot/grub/menu.lst file...

Please give us some feedback here.

Thank you

It still failed to boot. So I finally decided to use Optiflex 330 instead of Optiflex 320. And yes, the intrepid installed and run successfully. I think this will be homework for Ubuntu's developers to solve the problem. And to make Ubuntu availables with all vendors.

I wanted to let you know that the developers seem to have fixed some of the issues relating to this bug for the next release, Jaunty Jackalope.

I also wanted to advise you of these two links:
