outdated linux operating system

Asked by tracie

After a disastarous buy on ebay I'm stuck with a dinosaur laptop with an ancient version of linux.
Tried to update but couldnt as it had a password so every thing i tried to do asked for a password to allow it, i had to find out online how to change/delete and now i have my own password but in the process i have changed how it behaves in Bios, it used to let me change the values and now it wont so after buying a new linux cd i cant even install it.
Please help me

What OS and release of the OS are you using please? If you are unsure then you can run:

lsb_release -a; uname -a

And give the output.

Thanks
