How do I compare a backup with the original?

I am just backing up my /home folder including hidden files and folders. While copying, Ubuntu 8.10 live cd told me that it couldn't copy some ".nameoffileorfolder" files.

After copying, I want to check with some tool which files have been copied and which haven't been copied. Do you know any comfortable tool that I can start from an Ubuntu 8.10 live cd?

In 8.04 it is kdiff3 and in 8.10 it's compare I think both packages should be included in the Synaptic Package Manager.

I know kdiff3 but not compare.
