Recovering backup data, which access rights do I need?

Asked by oss_test_launchpad

After updating Ubuntu 8.10, my system is completely crashed. Dist-upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 5+ did not help.

I therefore now inserted an Ubuntu 8.10 live cd in order to be able to copy all my data to an external NTFS formatted USB HDD.

My questions are:

1.) In order to get as many files as possible from my old system (I don't want to lose anything, I'll check out what I really need later), I started Nautilus from the live cd system with sudo. Does this have any effect on the access rights that my files on the backup HDD will have?

2.) Asking the other way round: Which access rights should normal user data (as you find it in the home directory) have - text documents etc.?

3.) What access rights should a Mozilla Thunderbird profile have? I want to install a new system and then substitute the default Thunderbird folder by my old Thunderbird folder, but I am not sure which access rights I should give it then (the folder and the files in all subdirectories).

4.) What access rights should a Firefox bookmarks file have?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Recovering backup data, which access rights do I need?: I guess you need the same privileges resp. access rights you had when you created the bacjkup.

Can you help with this problem?
