Cannot install 8.10 Server AMD64

Asked by Jonathan59

I am not a techie, but a dabbler – oh dear!

I wanted to use Unison’s IPT (PBX-UC) application, that runs on Linux. It suggests Ubuntu Server. So I downloaded the 64b AMD version to match the spare PC I planned to install it on. It has 4 x 1G Kingstone RAM. Have half formatted a new 80G HD especially for this. I have slow burned the Ubuntu to CD, read lots of the help guides and forums, then pressed on.

Done all that, but then the install started. Inserted my CD at Boot, followed the instructions, selected Install, and it then stops:

[ 0.004000] Aperture pointing to e820 RAM. Ignoring.
[ 0.004000] Your BIOS doesn’t leave a aperture memory hole
[ 0.004000] Please enable the IOMMU option in the BIOS setup
[ 0.004000] This costs you 64MB of RAM

So have been in to my BIOS settings and it does not have this option. I have enabled and disabled god knows what to see if it made any difference – NOT, I am now stuck. I have even tried taking out the RAM, but it will not even start (not surprised). I have looked far and wide on the literature and help files , and only found a vague reference, but now more – something about it gets lost with higher than 512kb RAM unless the setting is changed, but no information.

Can anyone help me before the wife kills me!

Additional to above:
It should be noted that the motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA6 GVM S2 (P8), which has a fixed BIOS setting: built-in RAM and autodetects and fixes (unchangable) Extended RAM.

Also the first line of the error report changes slightly, I have noticed. Other comments are:
[ 0.004000] Aperture beyond 4GB. Ignoring.

My gut feel, based on what I have read is that the problem is that the system does not like the Extended RAM for installation, so it has to be turned off or the install has to ignore it, which it is trying to do. The Gigabyte MB does not allow any changes, hence it won't work. That is my guess, but I am not technical.

I am getting very frustrated and worried, and questioning my rationale in changing. nobody is coming to my aid.

If your system is working, you can ignore those messages.

This is a BIOS related bug, you can try to upgrade your BIOS to fix the problem.

Here's the link to the BIOS files for your board (but be sure to verify the motherboard model):

Here's a thread that discusses your issue:
